The story of Bourgeois Guitars begins with its founder, Dana Bourgeois. Dana's journey into the world of guitar making started in the early '70s during his time at Maine’s Bowdoin College. His first guitars were built in his dorm room, guided by Irving Sloan's Classical Guitar Construction book and a passion for learning. With the encouragement of legendary flatpicker Tony Rice, Dana honed his skills, leading to groundbreaking innovations that have left an indelible mark on modern acoustic guitar design. One of Dana's most significant contributions is the revival of the OM (Orchestra Model) guitar. Partnering with fingerstyle artist Eric Schoenberg, Dana reintroduced this vintage style to contemporary guitarists, influencing countless players and manufacturers. His work on the Schoenberg Soloist, built in collaboration with the C.F. Martin Co., set a new standard for OM-style guitars and inspired numerous imitations. |
Bourgeois Guitars is renowned for its unique design elements, including a distinctive X-bracing system, the reintroduction of Adirondack Spruce as a tonewood, and an innovative bolt-on neck design. Dana's meticulous method of tap-tuning each guitar top ensures optimal sound and flexibility, regardless of the body size or tonewood species. Additionally, Dana has advanced the use of torrefaction, a Finnish method of heat-treating timber to mimic the effects of natural aging, resulting in guitars with vintage looks, feel, and tone.
