He pursued formal training in violin making at the Guangzhou No. 2 Light Industry Municipal Bureau Professional Technical School under esteemed mentors Xu Fu and Liang Guo Hui. In 1985, Cao relocated to the United States, refining his expertise in restoring and repairing fine instruments under renowned figures such as Roland Feller, Hans Weisshaar, and Luiz Bellini.
