What’s the difference between tonewoods (e.g., mahogany vs. rosewood)?
onewoods play a major role in shaping an instrument’s sound, feel, and character. Common options include mahogany, rosewood, maple, koa, walnut, spruce, and cedar—each offering a unique tonal profile and response. No two tonewoods sound exactly the same, and the best choice often depends on your playing style, musical genre, and personal preferences.
We’d love to guide you through the tonewood selection process. Just give us a call, message us, or stop by—we’re happy to help you find the right wood combination for your perfect tone.
How do I choose the right guitar, mandolin, or fiddle?
Choosing the right instrument is a highly personal and subjective decision. It depends on your musical goals, preferred sound, playing style, body size, and even the feel of the neck in your hands. Whether you're drawn to the bright chop of a mandolin, the warmth of a dreadnought guitar, or the soulful tone of a fiddle, the right fit should inspire you every time you pick it up.
We’re here to help you make that decision with confidence. Our team of experienced musicians offers honest, expert guidance, live demo videos, and even virtual consultations. Don’t hesitate to reach out—we’d love to help you find the instrument that feels just right.
What brands do you carry?
At The Acoustic Shoppe, we proudly carry a handpicked selection of the best acoustic instrument brands in the world, chosen for their craftsmanship, tone, and long-term value. Our top brands include:
Eastman, Martin, Alvarez, Boucher, Atkin, Bourgeois, Bedell, Breedlove, Deering, Yamaha, Furch, and more.
In addition to new instruments, we also offer a rotating selection of vintage and pre-owned instruments, each inspected and professionally set up to meet our high standards. Whether you’re after a classic model with character or a like-new deal on a premium brand, you’ll find something special here.
Do your instruments come set up and ready to play?
Yes—every instrument we sell is professionally set up and ready to play right out of the box. Each one goes through our 23-Point Inspection, performed by experienced musicians and luthiers who understand how an instrument should feel and sound.
We inspect every instrument when it arrives at our shop and again before it ships, ensuring it meets or exceeds factory specifications for tone, playability, and quality. Our setup includes adjustments to action, intonation, neck relief, and more to make sure it’s playing at its best.
Most retailers skip this step—but we believe every player deserves an instrument that inspires confidence from the very first note.
Can I customize or special-order an instrument?
Absolutely! We work closely with many of today’s top boutique builders, including Martin, Bedell, Bourgeois, Boucher, and more, to help you create or order the perfect custom instrument.

What’s the difference between solid wood and laminate wood guitars?
The type of wood used in a guitar—whether solid or laminate—has a major impact on tone, resonance, durability, and price.
Solid wood guitars are made from single pieces of tonewood and are known for their richer tone, improved sustain, and dynamic response. Over time, solid wood opens up and sounds even better with age, making them ideal for serious players or long-term investments.
Laminate guitars use layered wood, which makes them more affordable and more resistant to humidity and temperature changes. They’re a great choice for beginners, travel instruments, or anyone who needs something durable and low-maintenance.
Every player is different—and we’re happy to help you decide which construction fits your needs and playing style. Just reach out!
What’s the difference between A-style and F-style mandolins?
The main difference between A-style and F-style mandolins comes down to appearance and tradition, more than sound.
A-style mandolins have a simple, teardrop-shaped body and are generally more affordable due to their straightforward construction. They produce a warm, balanced tone and are great for a variety of musical styles.
F-style mandolins feature decorative scrolls and points, giving them a more ornate, traditional look. They’re often preferred in bluegrass for their iconic styling and focused tone, though the actual tonal difference is minimal compared to A-styles.
Most players choose based on visual preference, budget, and musical genre—and lastly, sound. Want to see the difference for yourself? Check out our quick comparison video here:
What’s the difference between open-back and resonator banjos?
The biggest difference between open-back and resonator banjos is how they project sound—and which style of music they’re commonly used for.
Open-back banjos are lighter in weight and have a more mellow, old-time tone. Without a resonator, they produce a warmer, more subdued sound that’s perfect for clawhammer and old-time folk styles.
Resonator banjos include a resonator on the back, which helps project the sound forward, creating a brighter, louder, and more cutting tone. These are the go-to choice for bluegrass players who need volume and clarity in ensemble settings.
If you’re not sure which is right for you, our team is happy to help guide you based on your playing style, genre, and personal tone preferences.
What’s the difference between beginner and intermediate instruments?
Beginner instruments are designed to be affordable, easy to play, and durable, making them perfect for those just starting out. They often use more cost-effective materials and simpler construction to keep the price accessible, without compromising basic tone and functionality.
Intermediate instruments, on the other hand, feature upgraded tonewoods, improved craftsmanship, and better hardware, resulting in richer tone, greater responsiveness, and enhanced playability. These are ideal for players who are progressing in skill and want a more inspiring, expressive instrument.
If you're unsure which level is right for you, our team is happy to help you find the perfect match based on your goals, playing style, and budget.
Essential Accessories for Acoustic Instruments
What accessories do I need for my acoustic guitar?
When buying an acoustic guitar, having the right accessories can make a huge difference in your playing experience and instrument care. Here are the essentials we recommend for most players:
- Tuner – A clip-on tuner helps you stay in tune and develop your ear.
- Gig bag or case – Protect your guitar at home and on the go.
- Strap – Adds comfort while standing and supports your posture.
- Capo – Allows you to change keys easily without retuning.
- Picks – Try a few shapes and thicknesses to find what feels best.
- Extra strings – Always keep a backup set handy for breakage or tone refresh.
- Humidifier – Essential for protecting your guitar from dryness or cracking, especially in dry climates.
- Polishing cloth – Keeps your finish clean and free from buildup.
If you're just getting started, we’d be happy to build a custom accessory bundle to suit your needs—and help you avoid buying things you don’t.
What accessories do I need for my mandolin?
Mandolin players benefit from a few key accessories that enhance playability, protect the instrument, and improve sound quality. Here’s what we recommend:
- Tuner – A clip-on tuner is essential for keeping your mandolin in tune, especially with doubled strings.
- Case or gig bag – If your new mandolin didn’t come with one, a quality case or gig bag will protect it from bumps, weather, and help control humidity.
- Picks – Mandolin players usually prefer thicker picks for tone and control—try a few to find what feels and sounds best to you.
- Strap – A secure strap helps maintain proper playing position while seated, and is essential when standing. F-style mandolins typically use a loop around the scroll, while A-style mandolins usually require a strap button to be installed.
- Extra strings – Mandolin strings wear out quickly, losing tone, tuning stability, and comfort. Keep an extra set on hand for easy replacements.
- Humidifier – Prevents cracks and warping, especially in solid-wood instruments, by maintaining proper moisture levels.
- Armrest or tone guard (optional) – Adds comfort and helps keep your tone consistent during long playing sessions.
We’re always happy to help you build the perfect accessory setup based on your playing style and the type of mandolin you own.
What accessories do I need for my banjo?
Having the right accessories can make a big difference in your tone, comfort, and playing experience. Here are the essentials we recommend for banjo players:
- Tuner – A clip-on tuner is a must, especially with 5-string banjos where the fifth string can drift out easily.
- Case or gig bag – Protect your banjo from damage and climate changes during storage or travel.
- Fingerpicks and thumbpick – Essential for bluegrass-style picking. Try different materials and sizes to find what works best for your tone and touch.
- Strap – A good banjo strap supports the weight evenly and is important for both sitting and standing. Look for styles that attach securely to the brackets or hooks.
- Extra strings – Banjo strings can wear quickly with frequent picking. Keeping spare sets on hand ensures you're always ready to play.
- Capo and 5th string capo or spikes – A capo allows you to easily change keys, while spikes or a dedicated 5th string capo are helpful for bluegrass and melodic styles.
- Bridge and head maintenance tools (optional) – For players looking to dial in their tone, having an extra bridge or adjusting the banjo head tension can make a big difference.
- Humidifier (especially for wooden rims and necks) – Helps prevent warping or cracking in sensitive areas of the instrument.
Our team is always happy to walk you through the best accessory options based on your banjo type and musical goals.
Do I need fingerpicks to play banjo?
That depends on the style of music you want to play.
If you're playing bluegrass, fingerpicks are considered essential. Most bluegrass banjo players use two metal fingerpicks and one plastic thumbpick to get that bright, driving tone and volume the style is known for.
For clawhammer, old-time, or folk styles, fingerpicks are typically not used. These styles favor a more mellow, percussive tone achieved by striking the strings with the back of the nail or fingertip.
Not sure which approach is right for you? We’re happy to help you figure out what fits your playing style and comfort best—and we stock a variety of fingerpicks to help you experiment and find your ideal setup.
What kind of pick should I use for mandolin?
Mandolin picks are a huge part of your tone and feel—and choosing the right one depends on your playing style and preferences.
Most mandolin players prefer thicker picks (often 1.5mm and up) because they provide greater control and a warmer, fuller tone, especially for fast picking and tremolo techniques. Picks with rounded tips can soften the attack, while pointed tips give a sharper, more articulate sound.
Some players love the traditional “teardrop” shape, while others prefer larger triangle or rounded shapes for added grip and flexibility. Materials like acrylic, casein, or high-density polymers can also affect tone and grip feel.
We carry a wide range of mandolin picks and are happy to help you test and compare until you find the one that fits your sound and style.
What’s the best tuner for an acoustic instrument?
The best tuner for your acoustic instrument depends on your preferences and playing environment, but for most players, a clip-on tuner is the go-to option.
Clip-on tuners attach directly to the headstock and read vibrations through the wood, making them perfect for quiet environments, noisy jam sessions, or live performances. They’re compact, reliable, and easy to use—great for guitars, mandolins, banjos, and fiddles alike.
Popular options include tuners from D’Addario, Snark, and Peterson, which we regularly stock. Some offer strobe tuning, alternate tuning modes, and bright displays for stage visibility.
We also carry pedal tuners and soundhole tuners for those looking for a more specialized setup.
If you’re not sure which tuner is best for your instrument or style, reach out—we’re happy to recommend the perfect one based on your needs.
How often should I change my guitar strings?
How often you change your guitar strings depends on how much you play, your tonal preferences, and how well you care for them.
Here’s a general guideline:
- Frequent players (playing daily or multiple times a week): change every 3–4 weeks
- Casual players (a few times per week): change every 1–2 months
- Occasional players: change every 3 months or as needed
If your strings feel rough, sound dull, have trouble staying in tune, or look discolored or corroded, it’s time to swap them out.
Coated strings—like those from Elixir or D’Addario XS—last longer due to a protective layer that resists sweat and grime, sometimes stretching string life 2–3x longer. However, they may have a slightly smoother feel or less brightness compared to fresh uncoated strings.
Want help choosing the right string set for your tone and playing style? We’ve got you covered with expert recommendations and top-quality options in stock.
How often should I change mandolin strings?
It depends on how often you play and what tone you're after—but as a general rule:
- Frequent players (daily or several times a week) should change strings every 2–4 weeks.
- Occasional players might go 1–2 months between changes.
- Gigging or recording musicians often change strings before every performance or session to ensure peak tone and tuning stability.
You’ll know it’s time to change strings when they start to feel dull, lose brightness, become harder to tune, or feel rough under your fingers. Mandolin strings tend to wear out faster than guitar strings due to the paired string courses and tighter tension.
If you want your strings to last longer, consider coated mandolin strings. They’re treated to resist dirt, sweat, and oxidation, often lasting 2–3 times longer than uncoated sets. Just keep in mind—coated strings can slightly dampen brightness or reduce “snap” compared to fresh uncoated ones, which is why some players prefer changing more often instead.
If you're unsure which string sets are best for your mandolin or style, we’re always happy to help you pick the perfect set.
Do I need a case or gig bag for my acoustic guitar?
Yes—protecting your instrument with a case or gig bag is one of the most important investments you can make.
A case or gig bag shields your guitar from:
- Dings, scratches, and bumps
- Sudden changes in temperature or humidity
- Accidental drops or transport damage
Hard cases offer maximum protection and are ideal for travel, gigging, or long-term storage.
Padded gig bags are lighter, easier to carry, and great for local trips, lessons, or casual use.
If your guitar didn’t come with one, we highly recommend picking up a well-padded case or gig bag that fits your specific body style. It’ll help preserve your instrument’s tone, structure, and value for years to come.
Need help finding the right fit? Let us know—we’ll match your guitar to the perfect case or bag.
Do you sell beginner guitar bundles or starter packs?
Yes! We offer beginner-friendly guitar bundles that include everything you need to start playing right away. These starter packs typically include:
- A high-quality, easy-playing acoustic guitar
- A padded gig bag or case
- A clip-on tuner
- Picks
- Strap
- Extra strings
- And sometimes even a capo or instructional materials
We’ve carefully curated these packs to include better quality instruments and accessories than what you’ll find in most generic “big box” starter kits. You’re getting a guitar that’s professionally set up, sounds great, and will actually inspire you to keep playing—not something you’ll outgrow in a month.
If you don’t see a pre-made bundle that fits your needs, we’d be happy to build a custom starter setup just for you.

Repairs & Maintenance
Do you offer repairs or setups?
While we don’t currently offer full repair services, our team does provide basic setup and adjustment services for acoustic instruments.
Our in-house technician is a skilled luthier who focuses on inspecting and setting up all incoming inventory and outgoing purchases—so every instrument we sell is professionally dialed in before it reaches your hands.
We can also assist with:
- Neck adjustments
- String changes
- Pickup installations
- Simple setups to improve action and playability
For more complex repair work (like crack repairs, fret replacements, or structural fixes), we’re happy to recommend a trusted local or regional luthier.
If you're unsure whether we can handle a specific service, feel free to reach out—we’ll point you in the right direction.
How do I maintain my acoustic instrument?
Taking care of your acoustic instrument helps preserve its tone, playability, and value over time. Here are some essential tips:
- Humidity matters – Keep your instrument in an environment between 45–55% relative humidity. Use a case humidifier in dry climates or during winter months to prevent cracks and warping.
- Clean regularly – Wipe down your strings, neck, and body with a soft, dry cloth after each session to remove sweat and oils.
- Change strings – Swap out strings regularly based on how often you play (usually every 1–3 months).
- Store safely – When not in use, keep your instrument in a case or gig bag, away from direct sunlight, heaters, or cold drafts.
- Avoid sudden changes – Drastic shifts in temperature or humidity can damage the wood and finish.
If you ever have questions about proper care or need the right maintenance products, we’re happy to help you build the perfect setup to keep your instrument playing beautifully for years to come.
What humidity level is best for my instrument?
The ideal humidity range for most acoustic instruments is between 45% and 55% relative humidity. Maintaining this range helps prevent:
- Cracks or splitting in the wood
- High or low action from neck or top movement
- Bridge separation or lifting
- Fret sprout (sharp fret ends from fingerboard shrinkage)
Even if you live in a humid climate, it’s important to monitor humidity levels—air conditioning and heating systems often remove moisture from the air and can dry out your instrument without you realizing it.
We strongly recommend using a hygrometer to monitor the humidity in your case or room. If levels fall below 45%, use a case humidifier or room humidifier to protect your instrument.
Need help finding the right humidifier or hygrometer? We’re always happy to help you set up a simple system to keep your instrument safe.
Do you offer restringing or fretwork services?
We do offer basic restringing services and can assist with simple setup adjustments like truss rod tweaks and pickup installations. These are performed in-house by our experienced team to help keep your instrument playing comfortably.
However, we currently do not offer full fretwork or advanced repair services, as our luthier is fully dedicated to the setup and inspection of incoming and outgoing inventory.
If you need fret leveling, fret replacement, or other major repair work, we’re happy to recommend a trusted local or regional luthier to get the job done right.
Need a fresh set of strings installed or want help with a pickup upgrade? Just bring your instrument in or give us a call—we’d love to help.
The Dread-Not Guarantee & Warranties
What is the Dread-Not Guarantee?
The Dread-Not Guarantee is our exclusive customer protection program designed to give you total confidence when purchasing a premium instrument from us.
It applies to new instruments priced at $1,000 or more and includes:
- A 30-day evaluation period so you can take time to bond with your instrument in real-world settings
- A 1-year trade-in guarantee, allowing you to return the instrument for up to 90% store credit if it turns out not to be "the one"
This gives you the flexibility to test an instrument in your space, play it with your gear, introduce it to your bandmates—or even just compare it to others—without pressure or regret.
Full Dread-Not Guarantee Information
How does the 1-Year Guarantee work?
If, within one year of your purchase, you're not ready to commit to a long-term relationship with your new instrument, no worries—we get it. You can return the instrument for up to 90% of your original purchase price (minus shipping) in store credit, as long as it's in like-new condition.
Here’s how trade-in credit is evaluated:
- Like New / Mint – 90% (minus shipping)
The instrument and case are just like the day you received them—no nicks, scratches, or finish issues. - Excellent – 75% (minus shipping)
Very clean and well-cared-for, with minor signs of use. You’ve played it, but taken good care of it. Small cosmetic marks (four or fewer nicks or dings) are acceptable. - Good – 20–50% (minus shipping)
A player’s instrument with visible signs of wear and possible maintenance needs. May include light fret wear, finish checking, or a few significant dings. - Poor – Not Returnable
Instruments in broken or unplayable condition can’t be returned. These items would cost more to restore than they could sell for, which is why we can't accept them in trade. That must have been some kind of tour or you have a lot of kids...
The instrument must be in resalable condition, and our team will inspect it to determine the final value. Shipping charges are non-refundable and will be deducted from your store credit.
It’s all part of our mission to help you find the perfect match—without the pressure.

Do you offer warranties on used instruments?
Used and consignment instruments are typically sold as-is and do not include a manufacturer’s warranty. That said, every used instrument sold by The Acoustic Shoppe goes through the same professional inspection and setup process as our new inventory.
Select used instruments that meet our high standards are designated as Dread-Not Certified, and these do qualify for our Dread-Not Guarantee—including a 30-day evaluation period and 1-year trade-in option for store credit.
Dread-Not Certified used instruments will be clearly marked on the listing, so you’ll know exactly what’s covered.
If you’re shopping used and want extra peace of mind, keep an eye out for the Dread-Not designation—or just ask, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
What happens if my instrument develops issues after purchase?
If your instrument develops a problem after purchase, we’re here to help—even if it’s outside of the return window.
For new instruments still under manufacturer warranty, we’ll help facilitate repairs or replacements through the brand’s authorized service process. Just reach out and we’ll guide you through the next steps.
If the issue falls outside of warranty coverage, we may be able to assist with:
- Setup adjustments or minor fixes in-house
- Referrals to trusted repair professionals for more extensive work
We stand behind everything we sell and want to make sure you’re taken care of. If something’s not right, just let us know—and we’ll do our best to make it right.

Today, the Chapman family brings that same passion and knowledge to The Acoustic Shoppe—whether they’re helping someone choose their first guitar, reviewing instruments on YouTube, or just talking tonewood in the showroom.
They’re not just music lovers—they’ve lived it, and they’re here to share that experience with you.
