Tone-Gard

Stop muting your instrument. Let it ring.

The concept is simple, but the results are undeniable. When you hold a mandolin or guitar against your body, your clothes and stomach dampen the back of the instrument, killing its natural resonance. The Tone-Gard solves this problem by creating a small air gap between you and the instrument.

Used by professionals worldwide, this laser-cut steel accessory allows the back of your instrument to vibrate freely, resulting in an immediate boost in volume, projection, and depth of tone.

Why You Need a Tone-Gard

The Tone-Gard is widely considered one of the most effective upgrades you can make to an acoustic instrument—often offering more improvement than a new pickup or expensive bridge. By preventing your body from absorbing the vibrations of the soundboard's back, you get a "woodier," more complex tone that cuts through a mix with ease.

Every Tone-Gard is manufactured in the USA from durable steel with a ceramic powder-coat finish. They are designed to be safe for your instrument, featuring soft leather pads and rubber shelving at all contact points to protect your finish.

Finding the Right Fit

We stock a variety of Tone-Gards to fit different instruments and aesthetic preferences:

  • The Sunrise & Deco: The standard fit for most modern F-style and A-style mandolins (approx. 9-7/8" wide), including brands like Collings, Eastman, and Northfield.
  • The VintageGard: Specifically designed for wider vintage instruments (approx. 10-3/16" wide), such as old Gibson round-hole A-models.
  • Guitar & Banjo Gards: Specialized models like the D-Gard for dreadnoughts and B-Gard for open-back banjos ensure that every acoustic musician can experience better tone.
