Description
The pure acoustic muscle and pre-war projection engineered into this hand-crafted dreadnought represents the absolute peak of boutique American luthiery. Preston Thompson anchored this model around a solid Adirondack spruce top paired with solid mahogany back and sides, driving the soundboard with advanced, pre-war scalloped Adirondack X-bracing and a traditional tongue brace. This uncompromising structural combination delivers an explosive, dry midrange bark, a deep, woody bass response, and crystal-clear trebles that never compress or wash out when you lay into a heavy flatpick. Notes pop off the soundboard with blistering velocity, incredible headroom, and immaculate string-to-string separation, making it an absolute monster for driving a bluegrass rhythm or cutting cleanly through a dense jam circle.
Visually, the instrument exudes an authentic, historic pre-war vibe with its minimalist 18-style appointments. The body, neck, and peghead overlay are finished in a flawless natural gloss that showcases the rich grain of the Honduran mahogany and tight-grained Adirondack top. Tortoise binding outlines the body contours, paired with a classic 18-style three-ring rosette, an ebony back strip, a matching tortoise tail wedge, and a tortoise dreadnought pickguard. With a solid ebony peghead overlay featuring a genuine mother-of-pearl Thompson logo, old-style 18 Awabi pearl fretboard dots, and nickel Waverly tuners, it skips flashy modern ornamentation in favor of an unpretentious, heirloom-level aesthetic that radiates vintage class.
In the hands, it behaves with an exceptionally tactile, responsive feel designed for the serious flatpicker. The mahogany neck is carved into a comfortable soft "V" profile with a smooth vintage brown finish, giving your fretting hand plenty of traditional leverage up and down the 25.4-inch scale length. An ebony fingerboard is fitted with a 1 3/4-inch bone nut and a traditional volute, offering ideal string spacing that works hand-in-hand with the 2 5/16-inch string spacing at the ebony bridge. Anchored by a traditional thru-saddle, bone nut, and ebony bridge pins, every ounce of string vibration translates directly into the body. Built to uncompromising custom standards, the Thompson D-MA is a lifetime acoustic workhorse engineered for players who demand true vintage tone, massive headroom, and absolute handcrafted perfection.
