Dana's passion for lutherie ignited in the 1970s, and by 1977 he had established his own shop in Brunswick, Maine. A pivotal moment in his career was his collaboration with flatpicking legend Tony Rice, which led him to refine his dreadnoughts to emulate the balanced and articulate voice of his Orchestra Models. In 1993, he founded Bourgeois Guitars in Lewiston, Maine, with a mission to create instruments that would become the new standard for acoustic excellence.
Dana is renowned for his pioneering techniques, including "tap-tuning" to voice each guitar top for optimal resonance and his early adoption of torrefaction, a wood-aging process that imbues his guitars with a vintage tone from the moment they are strung up.

In 2019, Bourgeois Guitars embarked on a groundbreaking partnership with Eastman Music, a collaboration built on a shared dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
