Koa is a denser, less resonant wood than spruce, which means this guitar reads as compressed and midrange-forward when it's brand new, then opens into a more complex, more overtone-rich voice as the wood breaks in over its first year or two of regular playing. The appointment package on this model is built specifically for the Special Edition designation, not carried over from the standard 200-800 Series lineup. Paua abalone and Indian rosewood accents run through the rosette and body purfling, giving the koa's warm, swirling grain a contrasting inlay treatment instead of Taylor's more common single-wood binding. Polished bronze tuners replace the chrome or standard gold hardware found on most of the catalog, and a dark stained sycamore pickguard sits against the koa's honey-to-chocolate coloring rather than the black or tortoiseshell pickguards on other Grand Auditoriums. Onboard, Taylor Claria electronics, the newer preamp platform with a fuller, more natural low end than the outgoing Expression System 2, round out the build for players who need the plugged-in tone to hold up against the acoustic voice on a real stage.
