Overview
There's nothing quite like the tone of a mandolin. Legends such as Bill Monroe, Chris Thile, and David Grisman have explored the depths of this classic bluegrass instrument and created amazing genre-bending arrangements. The mandolin has roots that trace back to the 17th century, with 6 and 8 string instruments that eventually evolved into the most common variations: the F-Style and A-Style Mandolin. The F-Style mandolin is commonly associated with bluegrass music while the A-Style Mandolin is used in folk, indie, and even experimental music. Mandolin Orange's Andrew Marlin has created a unique blend of bluegrass and folk with his mandolin playing style.
Because of the complexity of the mandolin shape, the starting price of a quality mandolin is often higher than an acoustic guitar. It is always better to start off your learning journey with something that will not only last long, but will be easy and comfortable to play. Choosing a mandolin because of it's low price may give you grief later on. If it is not built to last, it will deteriorate and be hard on your fingers, so much so that you may become frustrated and give it up. We have compiled a comprehensive list of the best beginner mandolins that give you the best sound quality and playability for the best value.

Why we chose these mandolins
Top Wood Quality:
- Every mandolin should have at least a solid top. Laminate tops will lack resonance or projection and will often sound empty.
Adjustable Truss Rod:
- The mandolins we chose also all come with truss rods. If a mandolin does not have an adjustable truss rod, it will be impossible to adjust the distance the strings are from the fretboard and the instrument will quickly become unplayable.
Hardware Quality:
- Nuts made from animal bone will always sound better and last longer than plastic or Tusq.
- High quality tuning machines will keep the instrument in tune better and be easier to turn.
