Description
The Deering Clawgrass No.2 is built for players who want a banjo that can handle both clawhammer and bluegrass without compromise. Right away, the quartersawn English walnut neck and high-gloss finish give it a refined, high-end feel, while the overall design stays rooted in Deering’s practical, player-first approach. It looks traditional, but everything about it is designed to be versatile and responsive.
What really sets this banjo apart is how it balances power and control. The -06- 20-hole bell bronze tone ring paired with a 3-ply violin grade maple rim gives it plenty of volume and clarity when you need it, but it can also dial back into a warmer, more rounded voice for clawhammer playing. It has strong note separation, a solid low end, and enough punch to cut through a group without sounding harsh.
The neck is where a lot of the personality comes through. The wide D shape offers a bit more room for the fretting hand, which clawhammer players will appreciate, but it still feels comfortable for three-finger styles as well. A 1.37 inch nut width, ebony fingerboard, and JD Crowe-style bridge spacing make it easy to navigate, while Deering planetary tuners and a geared fifth string tuner keep everything stable. This is a well-thought-out banjo that gives players flexibility without asking them to change the way they play.
