Description

The Martin D-18E Modern Deluxe puts a Vintage Tone System top on Martin's most direct dreadnought and wires it for the stage. European red spruce, torrefied through Martin's VTS process, arrives already broken in — the cellular structure has been thermally aged to behave like a top with decades of playing on it, so it responds immediately rather than asking for five years of work. Genuine mahogany back and sides keep the voice focused and dry, trimming the low-end bloom a rosewood D-28 carries and leaving a midrange that cuts through a band mix.

Played hard, it barks. The forward-shifted, GE-scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing — also VTS-treated — lets the top move freely under a heavy right hand, which is what flatpickers want out of a D-18: fast note attack, quick decay, no muddiness when the tempo climbs. Fingerpickers get a different reward, because the mahogany's clarity separates individual voices instead of blending them. The Vintage Deluxe neck profile fills the hand more than a modern low oval, and the high-performance taper keeps the 1.75-inch nut from feeling wide up the neck.

The appointments are where the Modern Deluxe earns its name. East Indian rosewood binding, a 1933 CFM script logo inlaid in pearl, Waverly gold open-gear tuners, and an Old Style 18 multi-stripe rosette read vintage; the lightweight carbon-fiber bridge plate, EVO gold frets, and Liquidmetal bridge pins with red acrylic dots are modern weight-saving decisions that let the top do more of the work. Fishman's Aura VT Blend handles amplification, blending an undersaddle pickup with studio-microphone imaging so the plugged-in tone still sounds like a Martin. For a player who needs one dreadnought that records, gigs, and holds up to serious flatpicking, this is the D-18 with the ceiling raised.
