Description

The sheer acoustic presence and shimmering harmonic depth produced by this luxury jumbo model establish an impressive standard for full-bodied acoustic instruments. Martin engineered the J-14 fret body size by combining the depth of a dreadnought with the tight waist of a grand auditorium, pairing a solid spruce top with solid East Indian rosewood back and sides. Driven by forward-shifted, 5/16-inch Golden Era (GE) scalloped X-bracing and a traditional dovetail neck joint, this unique body geometry yields a thunderous, blooming low end, a lush, complex midrange, and sparkling, crystalline trebles. Notes blossom off the soundboard with immense dynamic headroom and balanced clarity, ensuring strummed chords never get muddy and intricate fingerstyle runs project cleanly across any room.

Visually, the instrument serves as a showcase of high-end Martin craftsmanship, blending classic Style 40 prestige with pre-war aesthetic cues. The full body is treated to a crystal-clear high-gloss finish that highlights the tight grain of the spruce top, finished in a rich Aging Toner, and the dark, chocolate-toned rosewood back and sides. Antique white binding with multi-stripe purfling outlines the body, heelcap, endpiece, fingerboard, and headstock. Shimmering abalone rosette purfling pairs with bone bridge pins dotted in abalone, a Style 45 backstrip, and reduced abalone hexagon fingerboard inlays. Up on the rosewood headplate, a vertical Block Inlay Golden Era Martin logo in abalone sits flanked by gold open-gear tuning machines with butterbean knobs.

In the hands, it behaves with remarkably fluid, fatigue-free playability across its entire 25.4-inch scale length. The genuine mahogany neck is carved into Martin's GE Modified Low Oval profile with a High-Performance Taper, pairing a modern, fast neck feel with a comfortable 1 3/4-inch bone nut for optimal string spacing. Thanks to precision factory Plek processing, the frets on the bound ebony fingerboard arrive perfectly leveled for buzz-free action and effortless fretting right out of the box. An ebony bridge with a drop-in compensated bone saddle guarantees optimal string energy transfer straight into the soundboard. Shipped in a custom hardshell case, the J-40 Gloss is built for players who want maximum tonal volume and full visual appointment.
