Description
The Martin 000E Retro Plus is a Road Series acoustic-electric with a torrefied solid spruce top over solid mahogany back and sides, styled after Martin's 18-style guitars. Torrefying is a heat-aging process, and Martin says it gives the top the seasoned, broken-in sound of a vintage guitar from the first strum. It is the first time Martin has put that treatment in the Road Series, where it had been limited to the Authentic and Modern Deluxe lines.
Martin describes the tone as balanced, with scalloped spruce X-bracing under the top. A 24.9 inch scale keeps string tension lower than a 25.4 inch Martin, and the 1 3/4 inch nut leaves your fretting hand room between strings. LR Baggs Element electronics with volume and tone controls are installed, so it plugs in without a retrofit.
The finish is a gloss body with an Aging Toner top and a satin neck, with black binding, a faux tortoise pickguard and Old Style 18 appointments, and it comes in a softshell case. We would point it at a player who wants an acoustic-electric to gig with that already has the aged-top sound, and who is happy with a softshell. Anyone who wants a hardshell case will need to add one.
