Description
This 1951 Gibson J-45 pairs a solid Sitka spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides in Gibson's classic round-shouldered dreadnought body, the shape that helped define the workhorse J-45 sound from day one. In Good Condition: this J-45 shows extensive checking across the top, back, sides, and neck, multiple stabilized cracks on the back and treble side, a diamond-shaped wood-inset repair on the treble side, heavy finish wear through to bare wood near the pickguard and neck, and various chips, dents, and gouges consistent with 74 years of playing history. Mahogany keeps the tone punchy and midrange-forward rather than scooped, which is exactly why the J-45 became Gibson's go-to workhorse for singer-songwriters who need a guitar that cuts through a mix.
Non-scalloped X-bracing keeps the top sturdy and focused rather than boomy, a design choice that's held up for over seven decades of steady use. The rounded shoulders push more midrange presence than a square-shouldered dreadnought, and the 24.75" short scale keeps string tension lower and the neck easier to bend on. Open-gear tuners with off-white buttons, mounted on individual side plates, keep this guitar's vintage character intact rather than swapping in a modern look.
A rosewood fingerboard and bridge round out the classic J-45 spec sheet, and the guitar ships in a hardshell case lined in yellow. This is a genuinely playable piece of Gibson history rather than a wall-hanger, and for a player who wants real vintage mahogany punch with decades of documented character rather than a reissue chasing the sound, this J-45 delivers the real thing.
