Description
This 1966 Martin D-21 pairs a solid Sitka spruce top with solid Brazilian rosewood back and sides, a tonewood pairing Martin only used on Style 21 and up before the Brazilian rosewood supply ran dry in 1969. In Good Condition: this D-21 shows binding reglue at both sides of the waist, a professionally repaired and double-cleated crack running from the bridge to the lower bout, and a chip missing from the "M" in the Martin headstock logo. Has a replacement bone nut, and is definitely ready to play! Decades of drying and settling give Brazilian rosewood dreadnoughts like this one a dry, resonant voice that newer guitars can't replicate no matter the materials used.
Non-scalloped, forward-shifted X-bracing — standard on Martins built after the war — keeps the top controlled under a hard strum while still letting the rosewood's complex overtones come through. The back carries its own repaired crack along with some finish loss and scratching, consistent with a guitar that's spent six decades in steady use rather than sitting in a case. A drop-in saddle and rosewood belly bridge round out the practical, no-frills Style 21 appointments this model is known for, and the bridge itself remains fully secure with no lifting.
Black binding, a rosewood fingerboard, and simple dot inlays keep the look clean and understated, true to the D-21's role as a plainer-trimmed alternative to the D-28. The pickguard shows some bubbling and the top has scattered glue patches, stippling, and worn-through spots near the edge, details consistent with an instrument that's been played hard for decades. For a player chasing genuine vintage Brazilian rosewood tone at a more attainable price than a comparable D-28, this D-21 is exactly the guitar the model was built for.
