Description
The real genius of the Eastman MDA315 is how it carves out its own distinct sonic space, offering players an immediate alternative to the standard mandolin register. Tuned a fifth lower (C-G-D-A), this 16-inch scale length instrument acts as the true tenor of the mandolin family. Underneath its understated, working-class visual presentation is a deeply resonant solid spruce top paired with solid highly flamed maple back and sides. Instead of a thick, heavy gloss, Eastman wrapped the body in their ultra-thin matte TrueTone finish. Visually honest and purposeful, it keeps things simple with ivoroid top binding and a clean maple headstock, letting the natural beauty of the flamed timber do the talking without decorative distractions.
Step up to a microphone with this mandola, and you'll quickly realize it's a completely different animal than a traditional A or F-style model. The massive 29" x 11 1/2" body dimensions create a deep acoustic chamber that lets the lower frequencies truly develop, yielding a warm, woody bass and a rich, singing midrange that sounds beautifully mature right out of the gate. Notes speak with a thick, robust weight, and the overall dynamic response gives chords a dark, cello-like complexity while keeping single-note melody lines clear, rounded, and direct. It’s an incredibly inspiring tool for tracking in the studio or adding a lush, harmonic depth to an acoustic ensemble.
In the hands, the MDA315 feels remarkably balanced, intuitive, and built for performance. The maple neck is capped with an ebony fingerboard featuring a 12-inch radius, which, when paired with a comfortable 1 11/32-inch bone nut, provides an incredibly natural string spacing that doesn't feel cramped during complex chord transitions. A stamped chrome brass tailpiece and an adjustable ebony bridge transfer string energy directly into the spruce top, while quality geared tuners keep your tuning rock-solid across all four courses. Shipped in a padded Eastman gig bag, this Classic Finish mandola is a no-nonsense, player-focused workhorse designed for musicians who want to expand their tonal palate and explore entirely new musical textures.
