The Bourgeois M5-A is a handbuilt A-style mandolin built around Bourgeois's Aged Tone process — a torrefied Adirondack spruce top paired with Aged Tone maple back, sides, and neck. Torrefaction bakes the moisture out of the wood before the instrument is ever built, mimicking the open, resonant cell structure of a decades-old top and giving this mandolin a mature voice right out of the case.

That combination produces a warm, complex tone with real depth and sustain — less about raw bluegrass bark than a balanced, musical voice that works equally well backing a vocal or carrying a melody on its own. Bourgeois's reputation for careful, hand-built construction shows up in how evenly it responds across the neck.

An ebony fingerboard, custom engraved Bill James tailpiece, and satin nickel Golden Age tuners round out the build, all under a high-gloss finish with ivoroid binding on the body and fingerboard. It ships in a hardshell case.

This one comes to us used, with some player wear and finish scratches on the top from time on the road. It also has a top crack that our repair team has carefully glued and secured — it is structurally stable and remains extremely playable, though buyers should be aware of the repair.
