Description
The Taylor 214ce Grand Auditorium delivers the same core Taylor voice players chase in the flagship 800 Series, scaled to an approachable price point without cutting corners on construction. A solid torrefied spruce top pairs with layered walnut back and sides — the torrefaction process heat-treats the spruce before the build, driving out moisture and resin so the top responds with a broken-in warmth from the first strum instead of the brighter edge of an untreated top, while the walnut trades rosewood's deep low end for a tighter midrange focus and a noticeably quick note decay, the kind of clarity that keeps chords from turning to mud in a mix or on a small stage.
That character comes through immediately in the hands. C-Class bracing, Taylor's traditional voicing platform on the 200 Series, favors a fast frontward attack and even string-to-string balance over the long sustain of the brand's V-Class instruments, so single notes speak fast and stay defined whether you're flatpicking a lead line or driving hard rhythm behind a singer. The Grand Auditorium body contributes real headroom without sacrificing that articulation, and the Neo-tropical mahogany neck's Standard Carve profile keeps the hand relaxed through long sets, helped by a 1-11/16-inch NuBone nut that gives each string room to ring out clean.
Appointments stay purposeful rather than showy: a matte finish on the top and back and sides that resists fingerprints and holds up to repeated stage and studio use, a West African ebony fingerboard and bridge that keep intonation stable string to string, and Taylor's Expression System 2 built in, translating the guitar's real acoustic voice to the PA rather than substituting a generic amplified tone. Housed in Taylor's structured gig bag, the 214ce is built for the player who wants genuine Taylor tone on the road, at open mic, or on a home practice bench, without stepping up to 800 Series pricing.
