Description

The Yamaha FG9 M feels like Yamaha decided to build a dreadnought with absolutely no shortcuts. From the solid Adirondack spruce top to the solid African mahogany back and sides, everything about this guitar is aimed at delivering strong, uncompromising acoustic tone. The nitrocellulose gloss finish, ebony binding with rope-pattern details, and Gotoh hardware give it a refined look, but the real story is how responsive and alive the guitar feels when you play it.

The sound is powerful, dry, and incredibly articulate. Adirondack spruce gives the FG9 M a huge amount of headroom, so it stays clear and focused even with a heavy right hand, while the mahogany body keeps the tone direct and punchy without unnecessary overtones. It has that strong fundamental note response flatpickers tend to chase, but it is balanced enough that fingerstyle and lighter playing still feel dynamic and musical. There is a lot of projection here, but it never feels uncontrolled.

The neck and overall setup make it feel like a serious player’s instrument. A 25 9/16 inch scale length and 1 3/4 inch nut width provide a familiar, modern feel, while the ebony fingerboard and bridge keep the response quick and precise. The semi-gloss neck finish stays smooth under the hand, and the Gotoh SXN510 tuners feel solid and exact.
